Our partner is looking for a Linux Software Engineer - Ubuntu for Next-Gen Silicon (multiple roles and seniority levels) based in United Kingdom. This role focuses on advancing Ubuntu across the latest generations of silicon and hardware platforms, working across the full Linux software stack. You will collaborate with global silicon partners to optimize operating systems, packages, toolchains, and software ecosystems for emerging architectures and technologies. Your work may span AI accelerators, graphics, networking, virtualization, containers, confidential computing, IoT, embedded systems, PCs, servers, and HPC environments. The position combines hands-on software engineering, open-source development, debugging, hardware enablement, and performance optimization. You will work closely with engineering teams, upstream communities, technology partners, and customers to deliver high-quality experiences across diverse platforms. This is a globally distributed, remote role offering opportunities to contribute to technologies shaping the future of computing. Accountabilities Develop, maintain, and optimize Linux software across the full Ubuntu stack for next-generation silicon and hardware platforms. Collaborate with silicon and technology partners to enable new architectures, hardware capabilities, and optimized software experiences. Work across platforms including servers, HPC and AI systems, IoT devices, PCs, SmartNICs, and automotive systems. Contribute to AI stacks, graphics, audio and multimedia, virtualization, containers, hardware enablement, and optimized toolchains. Support new architectures and architecture variants across x86, ARM, RISC-V, PowerPC, s390x, and other emerging platforms. Develop and maintain silicon-optimized packages, package dependencies, and distribution components. Contribute to platform security technologies such as Secure Boot, full-disk encryption, Ubuntu Core, and confidential computing. Debug issues across open-source and internally maintained software and deliver robust, high-quality solutions. Review contributions from other engineers and help maintain strong software engineering and quality standards. Collaborate with Ubuntu and Debian communities, upstream projects, internal teams, commercial customers, and external partners. Help customers integrate applications and SDKs, build operating system images, and optimize workloads across Ubuntu Core, Desktop, and Server. Contribute technical ideas and influence future engineering priorities within areas of expertise. Develop and maintain technical documentation and share knowledge across distributed engineering teams. Provide technical leadership through collaboration, code reviews, technical discussions, and engagement with external open-source communities. Work remotely and participate in global internal events requiring approximately 2–4 weeks of travel per year. Requirements: Strong software engineering fundamentals with experience developing or maintaining high-quality software. Solid proficiency in C, C++, and Python. Experience with or a strong interest in Linux distribution packaging and package management. Understanding of package dependencies, dependency resolution, and software distribution practices. Experience contributing to, maintaining, or working with open-source projects and familiarity with open-source licensing. Strong interest in Linux, open-source software, hardware platforms, and emerging technologies. Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse internal and external technical communities. Curiosity, flexibility, accountability, and a proactive approach to problem solving. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts clearly.
